When you stand up and fight back for our rights they will target you. It’s been like this since the beginning. Police shootings against First Nations people in Canada are a brutal and painful reminder of how the system sees us, as targets, not as human beings. Time and time again, our people are met with violence instead of help, often during mental health crises or routine interactions that turn deadly. Names like Chantel Moore, Rodney Levi, and Jared Lowndes are just a few among too many. These shootings aren’t isolated, they’re part of a pattern shaped by racism, fear, and a long history of dehumanization. When police show up with guns instead of compassion, our communities are left grieving with no justice, no accountability, and no trust in a system that continues to fail us. These shirts are created to raise awareness against police shootings against our people. There are shots in the back for a reason. It’s shocking. It’s brutal to see. It’s grotesque. You will be asked to cover it up in public and that’s the whole point… fuck the public. These shirt designs were created by me, a Nīhithawak artist from Mikisew Cree First Nations on Treaty 8 land and although I see the beauty in it; I refuse to focus on Kokum scarf designs when our people are dying at the hands of the pigs sworn to protect us.
